STANDARD TERMINOLOGY

CRIMP
Corrugations in warp and fill wires which hold each other in place when perpendicular to each other. Woven crimps are also referred to as knuckles.

DIMENSIONS
Width and length of material being ordered (i.e. cut pieces 6.5” x 10.25” or rolls 8” x 1,000 LF)

FILL
Wires running crosswise in the cloth as woven.  Also known as shute or weft.

MESH (n)
The number of wires per lineal inch or 25.4 mm, counted from the center of any wire to a point one inch or 25.4mm distant, including the fractional distance between wires thereof.  Specified the warp wires and second for the fill or shute wire. (i.e. 30 x 20 mesh)

OFF-COUNT MESH OR RECTANGULAR MESH
These terms describe wire cloth with different warp and fill wire mesh counts, which results in rectangular openings.

OPEN AREA
The fractional open surface area when looking at the cloth vertically. (w
2)/(w+d)2*100.

OPENING or APERTURE (w)
Space between adjacent parallel wires. (1/n) – d

PLAIN WEAVE
Each warp wire and each fill wire pass over one and under the next adjacent wire; wires are crimped in the weaving operation.

PLAIN DUTCH WEAVE
Warp wires are generally larger than the fill wires.  Fill wires are closely spaced to provide a dense weave with wedge shaped openings.

PITCH (p)
Distance between the centers of two adjacent wires.

POROSITY
The fractional void volume of the mesh.

SPLICING
Joining of two or more pieces of wire cloth together to produce long continuous running lengths in a roll.

SQUARE MESH
Mesh count is identical in both directions.

TWILLED WEAVE
Each warp wire and each fill wire pass successively over two and under the next adjacent pair of wires.

TWILLED DUTCH WEAVE
Combination of plain Dutch and twilled weaves.

WARP
Wires running lengthwise in the cloth as woven.

WEAVE
The way in which the warp and fill wires cross each other.  Common weaves include plain, twill, and Dutch.  Unless otherwise specified, the weave is understood to be plain.

WIRE DIAMETER (d)
Wire sizes are specified in decimal parts of an inch or the metric equivalent.  Wire size is measured before weaving, as the diameter is altered slightly during weaving.  Specified first for the warp second for the fill or shute wires. (i.e. 0.007”/0.0075”)
